GIF Advisory Council Meeting - May 2021

On May 10-11, 2021, the Global Infrastructure Facility (GIF) virtually held its eleventh Advisory Council (AC) Meeting for more than 130 GIF Advisory Partners and representatives of Multilateral Development Banks, Donor Governments, and other observers and speakers from around the world. The meeting was Co-Chaired by Mari Pangetsu, Managing Director of Development Policy & Partnerships, World Bank, and Jérôme Jean Haegeli, Group Chief Economist, Managing Director, Swiss Re Institute.

The AC meeting focused on “Investing in a Resilient Future” and offered insights on the importance of innovation and sustainability as key drivers for building more resilient infrastructure that can withstand future shocks--especially in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic and an intensifying climate crisis. Plenary sessions featured speakers from the public and private sectors and discussed topics such as how to “build back better” through scaling up investment in nature-based solutions;  recent innovations that optimize infrastructure design and delivery and promote resilience; and current initiatives and platforms at the intersection of infrastructure and climate finance  that seek to mobilize private finance towards sustainable, resilient solutions, aligned with the Paris Agreement and the objectives of COP26. The meeting also highlighted the work of the GIF and its MDB Technical Partners supporting transactions impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on projects in an advanced stage of implementation.
